U.S. State Capitols 'New Light' Project
Starting in 2006 PNE pledged to cover the cost of light bulbs to assure all 50 State Capitol buildings switch to energy-efficient compact fluorescent lighting (CFL). The program immediately began reducing greenhouse gas emissions, eventually targeted to eliminate tens of millions of pounds of CO2 from the environment!
Update: December, 2007
The new Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will phase out incandescent light bulbs by 2012-2014! Thanks to the work of groups like PNE, the facts of efficient lighting have reached our leaders and they have listened!
Status of Participating State Capitols To Date
| Location | Contact Rep | Savings |
|---|---|---|
| Denver, CO | Tom Plant | $90,000 |
| Concord, NH | Suzanne Harvey | $65,500 |
Facts:
- Warming of the climate system is unequivocal. Click here for background.
- CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gasses are the greatest contributor to global warming. Learn more.
- Every CFL bulb replacement reduces 500-1,000 pounds of CO2 over the life of the bulb.
- If every household in the U.S. replaced five light bulbs it would be the equivalent of removing nearly 10 million cars from the road. Source.
- CFLs use 75% less electricity, and despite higher costs per bulb they actually pay for themselves in fewer than 8 months. Learn more.
- CFLs last ten times longer than incandescent light bulbs, meaning that over the life of the bulbs the savings are at least $30 per bulb depending on electricty costs. Learn more.
How PNE's State Capitol Project works:
- PNE will donate CFLs to every State Capitol building in the U.S. at no cost to taxpayers. Private funding has been set aside for this special awareness campaign to educate policymakers and the general public.
- For each state, a lead legislator is being identified as a representative for this project. To recommend a specific state legislator or apply for participation, please click here.
- PNE will require a press conference at each state capitol to announce this initiative to the public. See sample press clippings below.
- Once each state contact is established (download application here), PNE works with applicable maintenance groups to determine the number and proper wattage of bulbs to replace.
